Meeting to support National Risk Assessment for Controlled Wood in Georgia (16 December 2014)
On 16th of December 2014, WWF-Caucasus Programme Office (Tbilisi, Georgia) held a meeting within the framework of the process of development of Controlled Wood National Risk Assessment (CW NRA) for Georgia under the FSC scheme. The development of CW NRA for Georgia began in the summer of 2014.
The consultant (hired by WWF-Caucasus to conduct the assessment) met with the Georgian Working Group members regarding FSC Standards (WGFS, registered by the FSC in 2014). The meeting was facilitated by Ilia Osepashvili, a Forest Officer at WWF-Caucasus and a Coordinator of the WGFS.
At the meeting, consultant made presentation about the purpose of the CW NRA and presented the outline of the initial draft. This was followed by the discussion of the draft and provision of comments and suggestions on the improvement. The next stage will involve the production of the first draft and agreeing it with the WGFS and FSC. This should be followed by the comprehensive stakeholder discussion of the draft, in accordance with FSC procedures.
The conduction of CW NRA for Georgia could be regarded as the first step towards full-scale certification of Georgian forests under FSC scheme. The CW NRA document could possibly help to improve relevant Georgian legislation and policies.
