FSC Friday (in Azerbaijan) – perfect day to announce winners of Ecological Competition

This year Azerbaijan was rich on inventing various ways to celebrate FSC Friday. Let us tell first story, which was initialized by WWF-Azerbaijan within “European Neighborhood and Partnership Instrument East Countries Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) II Program” (ENPI FLEG II Program).

First part of this initiative started on 11th-14th of July, when responsible forest management seminar for local Media representatives was organized and was finalized with marvelous field trip to Ismail Region forest and competition announcement among young and experienced journalists in three nominations the best article, the best photo - video material and the best story. Consequently on FSC Friday WWF Azerbaijan together with support of FSC Regional Office for CIS Countries organized an awarding ceremony for the competition winners:

Rauf Nasirov as the author of the best article, the creative team of the project called “I Want to Know Everything” for their video material and Gulgiz Suleymanova as author of an original story “The life story of paper” won the announced nominations and were awarded by diploma and valuable prizes. WWF Azerbaijan partners, who are closely connected with forestry, related activities as well as local media representatives, attended the ceremony.

Shamil Huseynov, head of the National Program Advisory Committee of FLEG II Program in his speech noted “that such events plays an important role to educate young and experienced journalists on forest management and legislation, and create a good opportunity to get familiar with FLEG II Program objectives as well as with FSC principles and criteria”.

Mariam Mattila, FSC Regional Office for CIS countries representative, mentioned that “the cooperation among FSC and WWF on global level, continues successfully for over 20 years and she hoped for fruitful work in Azerbaijan too”. To increase awareness amongst participants and winners, FSC Regional office presented FSC labeled souvenirs and showed video from new branding campaign.

At the very same day a new social media campaign started, encouraging social network users to be active and within a week search for FSC labeled products in retails, made photo with it and share it on WWF Azerbaijan and FSC Regional Office for CIS Countries web pages on facebook. Week later winners got FSC Friday T-shirts printed within FLEG II Program and FSC presents of FSC Regional Office for CIS countries. Konul Ahmadova, WWF Azerbaijan Project Coordinator, noted that: “such kind of simple web-campaigns turned out as a very fruitful awareness rising idea, where final consumers are encouraged to make informed choices about the forest products they buy, and create positive change by engaging the power of market dynamics”.

The EU Funded ENPI FLEG II Program (implemented in seven countries - Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, the Russian Federation and Ukraine) by WWF, IUCN and the World Bank. Voluntary forest certification is one of the important components of the FLEG II Program.
